GP: Much of my work plays with collapsing boundaries of visuality as they inform hierarchical delineations between one thing and another. I was interested in these oak trees as living organisms that collectively helped sustain the local ecosystem while being relegated to the margins of their urban, human environment. This particular intersection featured an encampment of homeless and houseless people on the Central Library grounds when they weren’t being run off by police, a well-used bus stop consisting only of a bench with no protection from the elements, and a bike lane that got squished into a dangerous, car-centric ramp onto I-35. I decided to stage an “intervention” by appropriating materials from nearby road construction sites and using them to create a space in which the trees were visually enmeshed with the human-made environment. The structures immediately around the trees also functioned as a liason between gestures suggesting intimate touch and the indifferent nature of the surrounding architecture.
